Mekele – Hamede Ela Drive to Hamedela via Berhale
Danakil depression is a dream like another planet can exist to see here on earth. It is full of different unpleasant natures with a barren environments and hard to imagine human can live there. The trip departs from Mekelle at 9 30 am in the morning. You drive about 4-5 hours to Hamedilla via Berahle. Berahle is a small town in Afar region with a population about 10000 peoples. Danakil has favorable conditions, rocky coast, sustenance and uncomfortable place, unpleasant and not offering hospitability regions of the world, but it has many enchanting natures and different kind of colors with elements rich of minerals with a lot of salt water springs and bubbling oil lakes. It has different places with different point of altitudes below sea level. They are lying more than 100 meters below sea level. After you eat your lunch in the town Berahle and proceed to Hamedilla. On the way you will see a different outstanding landscapes and the local people’s culture and their beautiful way of life style. Taking your sun set time in the salt lake Assale (-121 below sea level) and camping at Hamedilla.
Drive to Abbala Village
Early morning drive to Dalol which has many different water springs. The sulfur lake, oil lake, salt mining area with camel caravans, salt mountains etc.. You look all the sites and watch how the salt digging from a ground and loaded to camels in the mining place. And visit each places following the guides and with the local people knows the place very well. And drive to Abbala Village and overnight there.
Walk around pits and craters
You start driving from Abbala after breakfast at 9am. There is a long drive to reach to the base of the volcano called Askoma. On the way lunch and some permission activities are considered with the time. It’s about 5 hours driving half asphalt and half pista with a worse difficulties covered about 80 km sand and 12km gravel roads. This is an adventure driving takes 7hours to the base of the erta ale volcano. You enjoy the driving hours by taking pictures and watching widely spaced desert trees and loosely distributed residents. After this tempting driving you arrive on the military camp Askoma(means red sand by the local Afaric language). You stay in Askoma for about 2 hours until the sun gets down. You start tracking on the late afternoon to the top of the mountain. All the items and some water and foods (mattress and sleeping bag with sheets) needs loaded by a camel and follows as to the top of the mountain. It takes 3 hours trekking passing strewn small trees and sharp volcanic rocks with a little bit difficulties. The hiking is just walking for about 7km and hiking 1km a little bit steeper and totally covered 8km from the place you start trekking to the top of the volcano. Erta ale volcano is 613 above sea level. It is unspecified diameter in its apogee but daily expanding and becomes wider than the last eruption held before 2 years in 2015. After 10 minutes rest you will go down 200m away from the top of the mountain to 5m away the lip of the volcano to see the enchanting and breathtaking movements of the lava lake. This is the only volcano quite near to see from the existing active lava lakes in the world. And its mysteriously attractive and patient taking nature from other natural touristic destinations found in Ethiopia. Overnight on the top of the mountain on prepared small huts.
Back to the camp Askoma
5.30 am early morning you will see the striking activities of the volcano on the day time. You will be back to the camp (Askoma) 3 hours trekking down. You will pass with scattered small dessert trees and an igneous rock from the many years eruption of the volcano. And you will eat your breakfast on the camp Askoma. After 1 hour rest and arranging of cooking materials and all the sleeping materials, you will proceed to Lake Afdera for lunch. You can swim in this salt lake. And then proceed back to Mekelle.
